Wicked The Musical Review
Hello,
No spoilers.
I went to see the musical Wicked recently and it was extraordinary! It incorporated humour with drama in a tasteful way that didn't take away from the narrative. The Wizard Of Oz was my favourite childhood film so naturally I've been wanting to see Wicked since I knew it existed. For those of you who don't know what the musical is about, it tells the story of the evil witch and how she came to cross paths with Dorothy.
I saw it at the Apollo in Victoria (London). From the moment I stepped in I had a good feeling. The venue has a warm and happy atmosphere and the seats were filling fast. Excited doesn't quite describe how I was feeling. I know there are different cast members for different venues, but this cast was truly amazing. They captured their characters perfectly. The lead roles were played by Emma Hatton and Savannah Stevenson.
As mentioned above, I won't include any spoilers because it is definitely worth you seeing, but I will say that the musical is far from one dimensional. It focuses on both witches and ties into the original Wizard of Oz narrative very well, though I would change a few things. I was expecting the bad witch to be more, well, bad. That was kind of disappointing. There is also a lot of singing, which you'd expect as it is a musical, but only watch it if you actually like musicals and big performances. There are some parts you have to really listen to for the narrative to make sense. Personally, I enjoyed the songs and the frequency of them excited me. The ensemble are very good as well as the main cast. Each performance was well worthy of a lasting applause.
So to conclude, I would definitely recommend you watch it in a theatre near you. Wicked was truly wicked!
4.5 out of 5 stars.
